INvaluable INfo in YOur BOOK!! 30-30 NARIS PANEL

Dear Wendell,

It was great seeing you, along with your colleagues, at the NARAS event on Wednesday night! Thanks again for sharing your passion, wisdom, and experience! It was a fascinating evening. I've started reading the book and the information is invaluable--thanks for writing it!

I look forward to receiving the supplementary 30-30 advantage email with equipment advice, extra tips, etc. I'm going to sign up for the blog as well.

thanks again,

Best,
Pete Tufel

You were FIRE!!!!!! 30-30 NARIS GRAMMY PAnel

Wendell,

I said you were fire and I meant it - you are real, and it was very cool to hear your story. That's besides that fact that you create some really hot music.

Thanks again for donating your time to do this!

I gave my card to you, plus my contact info and music samples are below in the signature.

Besides, if it's okay by you, I'd like to contact you with entirely different samples in about a year from now - I am studying operatic and I have been told that I have an unusually high voice (surprisingly because I like to sing low and have been compared to Tom Waits among others). So I feel like a baby again studying techniques that are very new for me but killer. I would LOVE to show my new stuff to you after I get good. Please let me know if you are okay with it.

Best,

Lena

Your Words Makes Us even Hungrier!!!! NARIs the 30-30

Hey Wendell,

This is Andre, one of the young brothers you met last night after
the panel. This is a message to say thanks for taking the time to talk
to both myself and my artist/songwriter (Lawrence) last night.
Your words make us even hungrier to get our feet through the proverbial door.

Thanks for your time. We really appreciate it.

Peace,

Andre Dennis aka MediK
&
Lawrence aka D-Lock

THANK YOU 30-30 NARIS GRAMY PANEL

I just wanted to extend thanks to you all who've shared your knowledge, experience and stories "on-the-come-up" for all of us in attendance at the event on Wednesday evening.
Hopefully our paths shall cross in business, but if nothing else..hopefully as mutual beneficial resources and cordial colleagues.

Thank you again for your time.

Much continued success...

Sincerely,

"the next Mogul In The Making..."

TOTALLY AMAZED THE 30-30 NARIS PANEL

ey, Wendell.
It was so nice meeting you last night. I am TOTALLY amazed by the work that you do. You mentioned that you like to hear people live and I was so ready to sing for you last night, but it was a lot of people who wanted to speak to you. Anyway, I am interested in working with you. As I said last night, I sing jazz, soul, gospel, and country music.
I look forward to speaking with you.

Peace and Blessings,
Melika Miller

NARIS 30-30 PANEL GREAT TALK!!

Wendell,

Thanks for the talk last night at NARAS; I enjoyed it very much. I've been working in
this business for close to 30 years, first as a session piano/synth player, then as a
composer/arranger.
I found myself shaking my head in agreement many times last night. You really do have to
keep that "intern" mentality. Even though I never interned anywhere, I still try to keep
the attitude of
the new kid, trying new things and being enthusiastic about every opportunity.
Do you ever farm stuff out or need a piano player/composer/arranger? I'd love the
opportunity to come up and give you my reel, or I guess I'll have to play or compose
directly in front of you.
I've been writing for a bunch of music houses around town; Pink Noise, Wildvine/Three
Tree, Horowitz, Deep Diner....stuff for the Greco brothers........
You can check out my website at www.joncobert.com and let me know what you think.

Again, thanks for the talk, and I hope to see you soon.

Jon Cobert

GRAMMY 30 30 PANEL VERY INSIGHTFUL

Wendell,

My name is John Seymour and I attended your panel discussion last night at the Recording Academy. I found the discussion to be very insightful and informative, and your work was very impressive. I look forward to talking & hopefully working with you in some capacity in the future. I'm going to pick up your book A.S.A.P. Hopefully Barnes & Noble have it in stock.

I have worked in the Recording Industry for 16 years as a Producer, Engineer, Mixer, and Mastering Engineer. I won a Grammy with Santana, and have had the great fortune to have worked with Artists like U2, Dave Matthews Band, & The Mighty Mighty Bosstones to name a few, I was a staff Engineer at Electric Lady from 92'-99', and have been working as a freelance Producer/Engineer/Mixer ever since.

As I'm sure you are aware, the Record Industry has been in steep decline for several years, and I have been looking for other ways to "keep the lights on", while continuing my passion for creating music. I recently teamed up with a composer that I consider to be a musical genius & already has a few major commercials under his belt. We have 24 hour access to a great studio in Hoboken, an amazing roster of session musicians, and the experience & desire to succeed. We plan on ramping things up over the coming months and compiling an arsenal of music that we hope to place, or at the very least attract the attention of the powers that be in the Advertising Industry. Any help or advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You for sharing your ideas, and I hope we can collaborate in some way in the future!!!

Best,

John

And the winner is...Whitney Howard

Congratulations to Whitney Howard. His track has won the How Do You Work It project. We will be contacting Whitney today as he will need to re-write his lyrics to "How Do You Great LAsh"

The client said it was very close. There were people who voted for each of the three tracks but in the end, the majority leaned toward Whitney Howard's track because it had multiple elements to it: A verse a pre-chorus a hook a bridge a rap and an end sting!

Great job to all the participants in this assignment. This was the stiffest decision yet. Andre and Brian S STarr's tracks were 30-30 favorites.

You will be able to hear Whitney Howard's track after the adjustments are made today. We will mp3 his track to all members.

Thanks

HOW DO YOU WORK IT CRITIQUE and POST!!

30-30 Members look for your critique below. The above names will have their music submitted to the client! Very good submissions. Please comment on your feedback if you like. Many people decided not to work on this assignment becaus ethey did not have a vocalist. Congrats to those who finished the production because that's how you make yourself stand out. Be ready for anything that comes your way.

BRIAN S TARR (MIX 3)

Hello Brian S Tarr,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Music is hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* We love the drums and the sonic textures you put around the beat. You created excitement and instant dance feel for the club.
*Nice music structure in terms of he chorus music change up.
*One thing we noticed is that the music seemed to out do the lyrics in this track. The music is hot and seems to be more of the focus than the lyrics.
* One main thing to remember with advertising assignments is that the message is just as or more important than the music. If the client cannot hear their message, than they will feel like the song does not suit their needs.
*The solution is to turn your music down and turn up your lyrics. Also, sometimes you can drop the music out all together on the hook lines. Especially when you consider the whisper vocal.
*The vocalist has a hot voice. Super SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!
* Great job! Definitely going to the client!

MIKE CHAN

Hello Mike Chan,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Nice musical drive in your music Mike Chan. Beat is hard and poppy and sexy as well.
*We do not think your problem is musical. We think your track problem is the vocal production.
*WE think that the writing and arranging of the lyrics could be much better. The problem is that the performance of the lyrics fights the track in oour opinion.
*Also, the harmonies are out of tune and many places. The harmonies should be tighter and blend better.
* We also think that melodically you could have a catchier hook that works with your music.
*Consider having mutiple writers on your track and then select the style or melody tht works best for your music.

*Mix wise, your vocals needed to be compressed and more reverb or delay added to them so that they sound like they fit and sit in the track better.

*Overall, the music sounds good, but the melody and vocal performance take away from the appeal of the track.

RASHAD

Hello Rashad,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*The music in your track has the right energy. We like the sounds in your track.
*The problem we recognize in your track is that the vocals do not seem to compliment the track. We like the robotic sound of the “How Do Yo Work It “ Phrase, but the remaining vocal melodies and arrangement seem to clash with your music.
*Vocally, the singer is a bit out of tune and the descending melodic phrasing of the vocals is a bit daunting and dark. Your music should be sexy and hot without feeling ominous.
*Our idea is that you should connect with a really good lyricist and singer that way your music does not get overlooked and devalued by the elements around it.
*Also, always listen to a famous pop group prior to creating your track just so that you capture the personality and complexion of the musical direction you are looking to achieve. Take notice of what key it’s in and the instrumentation.
*Thanks for submitting Rashad and getting it together in such a short period of time.

NICK CICERO

Hello Nick,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Nice energy and musical production Nick.
*We like the fact that your track has an instant sound attached to it by way of the deep reverb!
*We think overall that the music track is edgy and different and on point, but we think that the writing on the track did not work effortlessly with the track.
*Some of the lyrics seemed forced, for instance “got his attention undivided” And “this happens every time I lash out”
*Every line should be as important as the other.
*We also though that the chorus melody sounded a little bland after the introduction. It didn’t hold up by the time we got to the chorus after the verse.
*The main reason we think this is the case is because the verse and the chorus vocal sound so much alike in terms of the octave and style it is sung in. As a result, by the time you get to the chorus for the same time, you don’t feel like the chorus punches out anymore. It nay have been stronger to have the verse sung in a different octave or even rapped instead of sung. We think this would have helped a great deal.
*Nice job. You kept it feminine and energetic. Let’s see what the clients say.

FUTURE MUSIC

Hello FUTURE MUSIC,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Nice Music chages and overall music production.
* Love the fact that you added words to the track. Great idea to take risks. Big Points for doing so.
*Sounds like you had fun with this track.
*I love the attitude in the voice of your singers. Nice JOB! HOOK IS BANANAS!!!!
*Points of caution: Your rap mentioned two competing advertising brands. The last thing that clients want to hear is a competing brand in a piece of music they are paying for unless there is a specific reason to do so.
*Your piece seems to promote these competing brands! Instant turnoff for clients.
*Mix wise, your track could be put on the next level with a great mix. All of the elements are there in terms of catchiness and effectiveness. The mix holds it back a bit and makes it feel out dated in sections. The rap is a bit old school. But the Hook is your ACE in the hole! You got skeeillz!
*Your track feels like a group with different vocalists singing different parts! Nice Job Future Music. Tight!
*Your singers and lyricists should register at www.the3030career.com because they should definitely pursue their career in this business as well. Build your network and grow your network when the 3030carrer,com surfaces in late February, early March!
*Nice job!

MIKE DAVIS

Hello Mike DAVIS,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*It’s too bad that you did not have any vocals to coincide with your track. I think your track has an edge and an energy about it that feel good. Thanks for doing the track even though you had no vocals.
*With the right vocal meody and vocal performance, we think your track had potential.
*We probably would have suggested that your track be sped up a bit more just to capture the complete energy you need for an assignment like this.
*From a learning perspective however, clients do not consider tracks unless they reflect the full assignment. Just keep this in mind for future assignments. We are glad to listen to your track at this phase, but just know that we would not be able to forward it to a client.
*Thanks for your submission Mike!

ANDRE DENNIS

Hello ANDRE DENNIS,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Nice production overall, music and vocally.
*Your hook is very catchy and we like your energy and the way you switch up the drums on the rapper section.
*Nice addition to the lyrics. You show a strong production command in your music.
*Your vocalists sound good. The beginning of the verse however they sound a little commercially. This could be due partially to the lyrics, but the performance of the vocal and the melody written to the vocal in the beginning of the verse could have been flipped a little different to take it out of the commercial vibe.
*Definitely going to the client! Nice descending vibe in your hook. Watch out for the chipmunk effect in your hook.
*The chord changes in your hook are hot!
*Nice choice of singers and rappers. All are tight!!
**Your singers and lyricists should register at www.the3030career.com because they should definitely pursue their career in this business as well. Build your network and grow your network when the 3030carrer,com surfaces in late February, early March!
*Andre you got skeeillz and it is going to pay dividends soon.
*I wonder what you rmusical range is outside of Hip Hop Pop R&B. We shall see. Nice JOB!

PLAYBOY CHI

Hello Playboy Chi,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Yo Playboy, the track production especially the drums are hot!!!!
*Smooth, almost loungey, definitely sexy!!
*Rap is tight! Good voice. Singer is right on time in terms of her vocal sound.
*She sounds like an artist and this very important!
*Your track is radio ready. We wish it would have had the upbeat energy that we think the assignment needs. But let’s see what the client says. When everyone goes left and you go right, you stand out more. Your track is tight. Let’s see if the client wants to go there! Nuff said! Your time is coming! You are very consistent in your level of production! I hope the client likes it!
*definitely going to the client!

*BLAIR ROGERS

Hello Blair Rogers,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Nice production. We are definitely feeling the energy over here.
The track was on another levl of unexpectedness. Very nice!
*We like the way you changed keys for the bridge and incorporated the rap in the hook.
Very nice.
*Your production musically and vocally were tight. Nice use of the vocoder as well.
*Staying current with production trends always helps.
*Great mix overall. I would try using a desser in some sections or maybe a bit more compression to keep the vocal balance in check at times, but your piece is hooky, catchy and definitely infectious. NICE JOB! Hotness!
Definitely going to the client!

*WHITNEY HOWARD

Hello Whitney,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Nice track dude! You really captured the essence of making a pop song and a pop commercial. Great use of space in your track.
*We like that your track let the vocals carry the song and not the other way around.
*Very nice mix. Your female vocalist is tight. You’re the rapper is even better.
*We like the fact that your track got better and better as the song progressed and gave the verse the hook and the bridge their own personality! Very nice!
*This sounds like a pop song and a beauty commercial. I can see how a director would like shooting to a track like this especially with the energy it gives off.
*Tight job! Keep it up! Let’s see what the client says!

PORTLIFE

Hello PORTLIFE

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

*Okay we’re real MAD AT YALL! The track started out bananas like a SURE SHOT WINNER and then the vocals around 20 seconds came in out of tune in places. *We like the Rhianna vibe it startrd out with. It was hot! But at 53 seconds in, the music gets dark when really we we were looking for the track to go back to the hot beginning you had.
*The chorus of your track should be the most energetic part of your track and your track seems to get dark at that part.
*Does your chorus track say “nigga” in it? Send us a copy of your chorus lyrics please. Even if it doesn’t, the fact that it sounds like it does, is a problem. HUGE PROBLEM for a client!
*Your track has big potential! Love the use of the vocoder. The male presence on the track is hot. We love the dance rhythm in your track.
* Be careful on the bridge, your vocalist is out of tune in some sections.
* Your track has unnecessary sections in it. The bridge is unnecessary.
*It was hot from the beginning, but some music sections like the bridge and the chorus were unnecessary.

M GORDON

Hello M GORDON,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

* The track was okay for the assignment, but we didn’t think that the effort and care was put into the track.
*The vocals saved this track a lot. Nice job on the vocal production.
*Musically it needed to be catchier and more feminine.
* We think you did a great job mixing it but the melodies in the music seemed to clash with the melody in the track.
*Also some of the words added were very good.
*Good overall sense of production but the track needed to be stronger.

Taylor DoRIght

Hello Taylor!

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

Nice job overall! We love the way you flipped this assignment.

*Nice use of the vocoder! I felt alittle T Pain meets Rhianna in this track. The rap was tight too.
*Musically we would have liked to hear a bit more edge in your track
*Just a little more.
* Your track needed a bit more femininity to it. It would have helped to have a girl vocalist featured more on the track but the male version still hit us hard and we enjoyed it.
*Clients I’m sure will want females on the track more so than male. This could eliminate you from the hunt.
*Nice job though!

Jamal Daniels BROWN UNIVERSITY

Hello Jamal,

Thank you for your submission for the “How Do You Work it” spot.

Here is your bullet point critique:

• Your track is definitely radio sexy.
• I like the contemporaryiness of the sounds.
• We would have loved to hear the vocalist on the track. Musically, it feels a bit too smooth for this assignment and we also thought it could use some more bounce to it.
• It felt like a ballad almost because of the absence of a strong kick. It came off more sultry hot than sexy hot.
• The track needed to be more energetic and fast paced and exciting and fresh.
*Even though we like it, this track is too sultry and loungey for this assignment.
*Thanks for the submission!
