UPRIGHT BASS and DRUM fast food PROJECT CRITIQUES

Hi 30-30 Here are the critiques. Look for your critiques below. We will post the winner in the next couple days.

Shawn J. Period

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your critique,
*Interesting arrangement however your rhythm is very complex for a standard jazz track,
*The drums and bass seem to conflict a bit, making it very difficult for a voiceover to cut through clearly.
*That little synthy sound that plays throughout the track introduces a whole new mood that doesn’t really correspond with what are looking for in this assignment,
*Overall, definitely interesting track but stick closer to the brief. The track needs to be simple and easy to follow--almost predictable in order for ust to pay attention to the voiceover

Mathiew Gordon

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Great bassline movement
nice drum sounds and fills, very authentic
Nice arrangement, the structure was very much on point.

Chuck Woods

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:

*Nice arrangement and structure
*Your track is a bit too slow however
*Make sure that your overall idea fits in 30 seconds.
*I like the live-ness of your track. Very nice for a future project.
*The musicianship is great. We wish it was faster

Joe Kasnter,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
We like the energy of your track,
The vocal hits definitely add personality,
The main problem is that your track doesn’t execute the brief
Try to find more authentic samples of your bass and piano
Change the chord progression or the voicings of the chords to make it sound more like jazz.

Delphi Productions,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Nice arrangement!
Rhythmically your bass line is fine, the rests let it breath,
You could add some chromatic passing notes to your bass line
Try taking out some reverb, it should make your track sound closer, more “acoustic”

Gustavo,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Good job on the sounds! Your track sounds authentic,
You could add some more harmonic movement to your bass line
An occasional Eb7 chord on the piano it would nicely brighten up your track

Richie Modad,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
You established a nice jazzy mood
The mix is good but your track sounds much softer then everybody elses,
Try putting some master compressor on your mix
Overall your track is a little dark, you could add some harmonic movement in your bass line.

Bill Kace

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Nice track!
Good mix, your track sounds loud and transparent,
Try adding some more harmonic movement,
Also keep in mind that minor keys may not work well for fast food commercials

Nice idea for a little intro,
Your mix sounds good
The little piano riffs establish personality,
The drums sound nice although a bit heavy
Overall nice job!

Warren Hibbert

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Nice energy!
Your mix sounds good,
Your bass line sounds great and hip but it’s not a walking bass line.
The drums are a bit heavy and have more of a funk, fusion character then what the brief said,

Jen Leigh,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Interesting arrangement,
Nice job on the piano, though it stands out a little much in the mix
Try to find a more authentic sound of an upright bass,
Your bass plays walking only in the second half,

Mike Leslie,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Good job!
Did you record a real upright bass?
There is a little too much room reverb on your bass line,
Also the bass stands out in the mix,
You could mask it a little with some brushes, maybe it would make the room reverb less noticeable
Overall nice job!

Stephen Skpper,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Interesting rhythm,
Your bass could be louder in the mix
Try to find more authentic sounds,
You could some chromatic passing notes in your bass line

*Very nice walking bass structure and arrangement.

*The personality of your bassline really does a good job of keeping the commercial light hearted and fun without taking itself too serious.
*Nice job overall! No complaints.

Nice, energetic piece,
We like what you did on the snare track,
Your bass line has more of a motivic character than a typical walking bass line,
You could have incorporated some more chords on the piano other than Eb minor,
The overall mood may be to dark for this particular project.

Jon Cobert

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Very nice track!
Great balance in your mix,
Tasteful piano work,
Very cool bass line and the acoustic bass sound,
Your track perfectly executes the brief! Congrats!

Kenneth Gladden,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Your mix sounds good,
Create some kind of a button at the end, don’t let it just end abruptly
Your drums don’t sound like a typical jazz acoustic set up, it’s the sounds and the particular pattern you are using,
Your bass line is stagnant, instead of repeating every note twice, you could have just let it move more,
The piano riffs sound kind of spooky and really “out” harmonic wise,

Jamar Sanderson,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Interesting arrangement,
Your drums and bass sound too avant-garde for this project,
- You could try simplify the rhythmic pattern and make it more steady,

Thanks for your submission!

Your bass line is not a walking bass line,
Your piano sounds overcompressed,
There seem to be some wrong notes in the last piano chord, check your midi window
The track ends abruptly,

Kevin Stanford,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Nice arrangement,
There are some weird notes in your piano track, check your midi editor,
Your bass sounds synthy,
In your mix the bass stands out too much, maybe you could try dropping it an octave lower,

Carry Potts,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:

All For One

Your track is interesting and definitely has a personality,
These accents on the every eight note are cool,
Your rim shot sounds synthy,
Nice idea to double the bass with the piano,
The mix is well balanced,
Mr Brown And Tate

The snare tremolo in the beginning sound a little too synthy,
This rimshot sounds much better than the one in your first track,
The ride stands a lot in the mix,
David Ford,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Cool intro,
The bass line is choppy, you could just make it a standard walking bass,
Nice energy, but the drums may be a little too busy, too engaging,

Intro,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:
Cool track, but it’s not a jazz track,
No walking bass, and the horns and the string pad sound are very synthy,
Follow the brief,

Victory Ledgerwood,

Thanks for your submission!
Here is your bullet point critique:

Nice track, well mixed,
Your bass is NOT a walking bass line however and that's the description for this assignment
Nice piano inserts,
The walking bassline would provide a laid back yet cool vibe for the commercial that is easy to talk over
And since walking basslines are a traditional formula, they do not get in the way of dialogue by feeling too busy or unpredictable. The predictability is what makes it work.
