Thanks for the honest and candid feedback. It was difficult to select 8
tracks from my entire library...
Nevertheless, I appreciate the critical analysis of each song in it's
entirety.

The internship was a great opportunity to gauge my development and get some
much needed feedback from professionals.

My day job has me fully engaged w/ support to Haiti relief/aid efforts. But
I look forward to getting back to studio work when the chance arrives.

*Low commercial sellability in the commercial world on this track because it would need a commercial that is very specific to this sound. Urban slow and laid back and mysterious.
*The closest commercial category this track comes to would be "sexy" and this track could be sold for a "sexy" ad provided the picture was looking for something loungy and sexy.
*Strings could be more realistic sounding; be careful not to mix all your instruments together to the point where they sound "mushy" and lose all definition.

*Strings need to be out front more. Your main melody in the hook of this track is too tucked into the mix and you can barely hear it

*Again it IS a good track but here are the issues with its sellability: It sounds very introspective and dark and investigative.
*The chorus of this track takes 30 seconds to finish one loop. If the point of your track takes 30 seconds to complete, it's going to be hard to sell the idea.
*Not an easily placeable track in commercials. Easier to place in television drama shows.

* will work well possibly with lyrics but alone it needs a lot of adjustments to make it sellable

*Again this doesn't make it bad, it just pigeonholes it and when we are basing our judgement on sellabilty, we are unable to find a high sellability factor

Overall, you should create tracks that make statements in shorter amounts of time. The songs that are the hits on the radio make statements in short amounts of time. party tracks make their statement in one to four measures.

Your track needs more shape and a better arrangement
It never builds or inspires us. It is adequate music but not inspirational music
You need to concentrate on making music that is special and not just a groove loop as represented here.
This version is missing personality because it doesn't grow from where it begins.
If we think of the music like a song, it seems as though you have a verse but no chorus.
I don't feel fulfilled after listening to your track. I'm feeling like the track never got to where it was going. It did not tell a story.
No need to include a vocal in this track either unless you do something musically that warrants it.
The reggae style vibe is not a good match for this picture.
Come up with something more motivational and inspirational yet contemporary.

This spot needs music that is more a call to action but in an inspiring motivational family oriented way.
The vocals in the beginning of your track color your track in a sad depressing way. If the footage was of a funeral your intro musc would be fitting and that is not a good thing for this spot.
It's a spring day and the mood she feel positive and uplifting from the get go.
You should lose the vocals all together on this spot.
They put the wrong spin on your music.
Musically your drums are a bit obtrusive and the flute is too flamboyant.
Your music is too aggressive for this piece and needs to feel more inspirational
See what you can do to address the family oriented call to action request from the client
Your drums should come in when we first see the classroom and your piece should grow as it progresses

Warm up your music to be more friendly all together. Inspiration, sentiment, passion, and motivation should be represented in your music.

HELLO BROB

THIS PIECE IS BETTER now that it is based in piano however it still does not feel elegant. It feels dark and mysterious as opposed to elegant and motivational and sentimental.

Also your piece stays the same for too long without developing much.
I like your approach to the idea of being focused on the imagery (I can tell you got into it)
However your track is create din a minor key and to get your track to be sentimental or heartwarmingly elegant, you need it to be in a major key.

Fix your key and try not to be as predictable with where your drums come in.
We are missing the beauty and the x factor that says "I want to see that spot again."
The message of the spot is to support the Special Olympics and it needs to be more inspiring and less mysterious.

*We are still missing some of that underground in the basement dirtyy vibe in your track
*This is better than the first approach but it needs to get even dirtier and darker.
*Listen more to the scratch track; keep some of the similar bass pulses that are in the scratch track reference.
*Turn your drums up more and fix your bass.
*Where's the voice sample vocal?
*Find a licensable vocal or sound and play it into the track.
*The horn section nis going to be important because it is kind of like a call to arms.
*EQ your piano like the scratch track and add reverb to give it that dark mysterious almost detuned vibe.
The scratch track has a call to arms vibe and that is missing in the emotion in your track.

*Nice first take on this.

*We need you to take another stab at this immediately. Your track needs a classical piano element to this in order to make it elegant.

*Right now your strings sound too synthy and sustain for much too long. We need you to have morte movement in your music.
The skeleton is evolving and so we need the music to evolve as well.

*Start off with a solo instrument like am elegant piano and gradually add new instruments as it moves along. Find a good place to bring the drums in but keep the elegance and the solo piano playing.

*End the track with the drums muted and a portion of the solo piano again.

*Try to use instrumentation that gradually builds and forms in the manner in which the muscles form on the skeleton.

*The client wants a combination of classical elegance and Hip Hop.

*We hear the biggest part of your track in the intro
*When the drums come in we don't hear that much of a lift because we have heard the theme
*Your track seems very redundant; try changing or adding something new every four measures.
*Arrangement will make your music grow by leaps and bounds.
*Also be careful about using thin overly synthesized sounds in your tracks.
*Your mix needs to be a lot stronger as well. We don't hear the thickness and impact in your drums and since your track relies heavily on the drums, we need to hear unexpected sounding drums that really lift your track. The drums you use on this track are adequate but not special.

*The fact that the instrumentation is slightly smooth and jazzy makes people lump it into
a style of music more suited for the over forty smooth jazz crowd.
To make this track more sellable in commercials, you can do the following:
-strip down some of the instrumentation in section so that it is not full from beginning to end
-Add a jungle or big beat techno drum track to it
-Change the arrangement of the track so that it is not so repititious and predictable
-Get rid of the solo synth sound because that makes it a smooth jazz track in the eyes of the ad business where you have
people who feel a need to categorize everything

*Jazz is not a popular form of music in commercials and when it is used, it is used in a very traditional almosgt overtly obvious way. This track is part jazz, part neo soul and sits in the middle. *Why does the amount of instrumentation matter? It makes it difficult to place voiceover on top of the track without the music fighting the dialogue

You had some good tracks here, but unfortunately they had vocals on top. That may be our fault for not overtly specifying instrumentals. I think going forward, let's assume that all music should be instrumental unless otherwise stated. I especially like the track named eve adams.mp3. Nice selections. Due to time constraints, we have to move on in the process. Nice job. Thanks for all the tracks. Some of them however, like Dos Manos or La Lucha had more of a hip-hop flavor than Reggae/Reggaeton. They could be used for future briefs. Hold on to them of course!

Joe recorded his voiceover i Wisconnsin and took direction from the client by phone.

30-30 member Dre' Dizzle edited and arranged the voiceover takes against the TITANIC picture. The music was composed by Sweden 30-30 member Glen Gabriel and Author/composer Wendell Hanes through what has been coined by Glen as PHONE-POSING. Collaborative composing via telephone and video chat has become an effective way to work!

“Smile” Carry Potts / Chris Delis

This track was aptly titled ,“Smile”. It certainly makes you want to do just that when you hear it. I really liked the overall feeling of this track. It felt very open and breezy and not at all overdone. The intermingling of the guitar parts felt refined and natural. The tune really lent itself to episodic television. You can imagine this song being played in many different types of scenes and it works perfect as an outro. It’s also the sort of track that would be very easy to write to because there’s a lot of melody going on in it.

Stereo Fallout

I decided to review Stereo Fallout as a band since they had four songs that I really enjoyed. ”End Of The Girl”, “Go”, “Black And Blue” and “Till The End Of Time”. This group sounds great together. All four of these songs do a great job of evoking visual imagery. Each track really builds well and all of the parts keep your interest. I also really liked the lead singer’s voice and the band’s lyrics. The songs had really good hooks that lent themselves to a commercial market.

“Gap” Ted

Here’s a track that I thought was taylor made for episodic television. It conveys a wide range of emotions. The keyboard part is simple but graceful. I could here this in the background of a scene. It’s unobtrusive in that way and it works as a nice bed for dialog.

“My Own Business” Madjul

Here’s another band that I really liked. The lead singer has some pipes on him. He has an amazing voice. These guys rock! It’s hardcore headbanging bliss. The track is extremely aggressive and it still manages to breathe well in the midst of all the activity.. Madjul do a great job crafting their songs. You can envision a sea of crowd surfers when listening to this one. And I loved the end.

Jeff Sample Happy People

I liked this song and I liked the way the hook was sung. I would love to hear it with the inside vocals. The chords reminded me of something that could have played in the movie Scarface. Nice combination of guitars and synths. And I liked the gruff in the singer’s voice.

“On My Own” Matt Clarke

Great song Matt! Great energy! great track. Very unique sound. This is a guy’s song. We can relate to the lyrics. “Sometimes you gotta start a fire to start again”. Amen bro!
Great guitar work. This song can really grow on you if you give it a chance. It took me a few listens to really appreciate

“Get Some” Tracy Skillz and Jen Leigh AKA DIRTY SKILLZ

This song has a great energy about it. The vocalist shows real charisma and the track compliments her well. The lyrics are both sexy and playful. This could work well for episodic television and also sounds like it would be great in a commercial. The overall piece had a real edge to it. Great job!

“Break My Fall” WENDELL HANES

Here’s one that I really liked. This song has a great memorable hook. Very thoughtful lyrics and a great backing track. The production is nuanced and smart. The mix sounds big and open. The pianos and guitars work very well together. I also really liked the way the vocalist delivered the song. This one was a great piece all the way around.

Here’s one that I liked because I thought it would sound good against the right visual. Very cool call and response guitar riffs. I like the way the track builds up to this very cool wall of sound. Interesting interplay from the various guitar parts.

“Walk Of Shame” Jen Leigh aka Dirty Jenny

I liked this one for the guitar riffs alone. It felt like a combination of modern metal and classic rock. It sort of reminded me of the group, Boston. It also had that Offspring, Nirvana, Foo Fighters feel to it. I thought this could work well against a montage of visual images and in scenes with little or no dialog. Nice track! Killer guits!

"Fall" David Tardy

This song is done exceptionally well! The production sounds great. The harmonies are well crafted. The
song has killer guitar parts and the mix is so hot! that it comes blaring at you through the speakers. The over
all track itself grabs you right off the bat and never lets you go. What I liked most, however, was that it was
extremely innovative. You get the sense that this act could really break some new ground if it wanted to."Fall"
has the potential to be a featured song in any number of episodic television and film scenarios.

Terrance moore Aggressive Rock MP3-2

This is a cool ass music piece! The hypnotic guitar riffs! the ambient vocal cries! And those crazy fast syncopated hats. This track does an exceptional job of building tension and anticipation. Something is definitely about to happen in this scene. Very creative! and artfully done.

John Seymour

Tracks were tight all the way around. Mix melody music all ready for broadcast! These tracks could get placed in a lot of different shows. I wouldn't be surprised if these were picked.

PORTLIFE

*The male rap is great, the singing section needs work.
*Listen for sections where the pitch is off.
*We also noticed that the singing was off beat in some places.
*The vocal should be sung with more energy and life. Think summertime fun or all year round fun.
*We like the voice of the singer but the execution could be better as far as pitch and style rhythm and energy go.
*The female rap is better than the singing section but clarity on the vocal would really help. Probably need to turn the vocal up.
*Nice job on the raps.

*Nice Job Carolyn. We love te fact that you created your own creative catchy melody over the track.
*Nice adlibbing as well.
*We would have loved to hear a stronger recording of your vocals. Maybe stack the "uh oh oh oh" part so it sounds like a big group of people.

*The decision to sing some of the original melody in lower pitches brings the brightness and energy down. To offset this, a party track of vocals where people are just making background party noise would help a lot.
*We would like to have heard you go up in pitch on the "hope you like jamba too" section.
*Nice duo sound overall.

*VERY nice production all around. Vocal is sung well. The rap is tight.
*Also, the pronunciation of the word jamba in the rap is incorrect. Easy fix if necessary.
*Very nice lyrics on the rap. We are wondering if some words get lost because of the speed of the words.
*Great energy. Maybe a party track should be added to this to keep up the noisy energy.

The 30-30 Book

Hey Wendell, I got your book 30/30 career and though it was great! There is only one thing the book does not address.

It is the following situation: If some unknown but world class producer is located in the middle of nowhere, how is he going to have his music heard? Most major publisher don’t accept material unless you have an attorney or a buzz. An attorney is very expensive and starting a buzz requires a great marketing budget (90% of the time).

The problem is very similar to American Idol phenomenon, in which hundreds of thousands of people audition(filled up football stadiums)to try out for the show, when only 2% actually have talent. This is why I believe the industry has these kinds of policy. They do not got the time. The problem is this policy hurts the 2% that do actually have talent.

So my main question beside Pump Audio and Rumblefish do you know of any agency that would represent ones catalog?

Once again, I though your book was excellent!

*Great instrumentation and execution but your track needs to be sped up to about 140 bpm. We need it moving and energetic.
Also, you stuck mostly to the instrumentation of the original. Can you add one or two current modern day elements in the mix to give us a 2009 quality.

*we like the risks you took. Nice energy! We feel like someone could sing or rap over this. Nice 2009 instrumentation.
*Let's get rid of the intro and just start with a large drum fill upfront.

*Check your horn melodies. We believe they could get in the way of the actual melody of the chorus. Re-phrase your horn melodies so they don't get in the way of the chorus melody.

*You establish I nice soothing calming mood up front with the strings.
*We were looking for your piece to grow and build and take us through different stages, but we didn't hear a moment where the emotions changed.
*We heard the cymbal crash at 22 seconds in representing your explosive moment, however not only does the explosive moment need more than the cymbal crash, it needs more movement as well as some repetitive motiff that grabs the listeners attention.
*Try concentrating on your build the next time more as well. Every four measures or so we should hear new elements enter the picture. We feel as though your piece stays too mellow for too long and doesn't take off in the manner that makes it exciting.

*We feel your track would be much stronger with the proper instrumentation. We know that using synthesizers on keyboards can be tough when trying to create a convincing orchestral sounds, but there are ways to mask the synthetic nature.
*Try stacking your sounds with multiple layers to fill out the body of your strings. Lower octaves combine with higher octaves fill out your sound and may help your overall ensemble sound less synthy.
*We feel as though the trumpet that comes in at 18 seconds should grow with the rest of the piece. Instead of it fading out, why not create a build and have the trumpets become layered in different octaves and overtake the motif that is going on in the strings.
* The section at 23 seconds in we feel is too flat and not appealing enough to have a true purpose in the spot. It gives the listener a false resolve that lingers for too long and without a picture to validate this section, it seems to detract from the appeal of your track.
*We were also looking for your track to hit an mark of excitement and explosiveness. The trumpet makes the music somewhat regal but does build the intensity of the track.

Your motiffs in this track are good, the main thing your track suffers from is the synthetic sound. My name is Timothy Bias I am a musician and a composer from Washington D.C. I graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and I have a Bachelors Degree in Music from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh North Carolina. In the present time I am currently working as a music director at Congress United Methodist Church in Washington D.C. 2 years ago... 2007, i went to NYC with 1,500 dollars in my pocket... and had only 3 friends that actual lived in the NY area.
With in 4 months ... I had met the Publicist for the Marley's (Shilo ~ , been to lunch with her Daughter... went to Ky-Mani's listening party, met him... the Owner of his label... been to Legends recording Studio in Time Square, shook hands with the owner, sat with Sadeq Jean (Wyclef's little brother) at his home studio in Irvington, NJ, been to 5 other studios... worked with Mike Del Rio on a track..... Shook hands with DJ QUALI from Jersey, Q-TIP, Maxx Wayne from Blackhand, Dipsets Fresh, One-Shot, a couple WU-TANG affiliates, Jay-Ru the Damager, got a job @ Cornerstone Promotions, met the entire staff, and the FADER magazine team.

All in all, i've worked with some great people, and on a lot of projects. The key to working on most of these projects... not all... was working for free. Although this is where the VALUE part comes in handy. After a while of working for free, i valued my work more and more. So, i started to exchange favors. I have found this is the best way to collaborate when either party can't afford to pay out of pocket. "I've got something you need, you've got something i need." When working this way, there is only one neccessary question you should ask yourself. Is this exchange a fair, equal value, exchange of favors.

To sum it all up ... I have a feeling that my music career is going to lead me to be more of a manager of producers ... or an "Executive Producer" where i spend more of my time recruiting work and pulling projects together, rather than doing all the actual hands on production myself. Like i said, i follow my heart ~~~

I had a fantastic teacher in school when i was in Ft. Lauderdale, she was my lighting professeur... She told me ... that by following your heart, you may not be doing what you thought you would be doing, or thought you wanted to be doing... But no matter what it is that you end up making a career of ... you WILL LOVE DOING IT ... and that i can promise you.

In 1985, I worked as Dir Asst, DeVito Productions, NYC film studio on19th St off 5th Ave. One bonus was editing the Director’s commercial 3/4" spots before he met with ad agency people.

One Friday, at 4:00pm, I had the once in a lifetime chance of working on a Diet Coke spot. We busted gut all weekend. Never stopped working. The spot aired weeks later in Superbowl 1985. My job as asst video editor was to look through all of Coke’s footage for scenes of people NOT holding cans of Coke!!!! I found them!!

The Time is Right is a good spot. Played it for Eric Clapton and he loved it (while working in a limo company). Coke turned it down as it wasn't written by their ad agency.

Perfect for the Obama Generation / Vision!!!!!

My name is John Seymour and I attended your panel discussion last night at the Recording Academy. I found the discussion to be very insightful and informative, and your work was very impressive. I look forward to talking & hopefully working with you in some capacity in the future. I'm going to pick up your book A.S.A.P. Hopefully Barnes & Noble have it in stock.

I have worked in the Recording Industry for 16 years as a Producer, Engineer, Mixer, and Mastering Engineer. I won a Grammy with Santana, and have had the great fortune to have worked with Artists like U2, Dave Matthews Band, & The Mighty Mighty Bosstones to name a few, I was a staff Engineer at Electric Lady from 92'-99', and have been working as a freelance Producer/Engineer/Mixer ever since.

As I'm sure you are aware, the Record Industry has been in steep decline for several years, and I have been looking for other ways to "keep the lights on", while continuing my passion for creating music. I recently teamed up with a composer that I consider to be a musical genius & already has a few major commercials under his belt. We have 24 hour access to a great studio in Hoboken, an amazing roster of session musicians, and the experience & desire to succeed. We plan on ramping things up over the coming months and compiling an arsenal of music that we hope to place, or at the very least attract the attention of the powers that be in the Advertising Industry. *Music is hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* We love the drums and the sonic textures you put around the beat. You created excitement and instant dance feel for the club.
*Nice music structure in terms of he chorus music change up.
*One thing we noticed is that the music seemed to out do the lyrics in this track. The music is hot and seems to be more of the focus than the lyrics.
* One main thing to remember with advertising assignments is that the message is just as or more important than the music. If the client cannot hear their message, than they will feel like the song does not suit their needs.
*The solution is to turn your music down and turn up your lyrics. Also, sometimes you can drop the music out all together on the hook lines. Especially when you consider the whisper vocal.
*The vocalist has a hot voice. Super SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Nice musical drive in your music Mike Chan. Beat is hard and poppy and sexy as well.
*We do not think your problem is musical. We think your track problem is the vocal production.
*WE think that the writing and arranging of the lyrics could be much better. The problem is that the performance of the lyrics fights the track in oour opinion.
*Also, the harmonies are out of tune and many places. The harmonies should be tighter and blend better.
* We also think that melodically you could have a catchier hook that works with your music.
*Consider having mutiple writers on your track and then select the style or melody tht works best for your music.

*Mix wise, your vocals needed to be compressed and more reverb or delay added to them so that they sound like they fit and sit in the track better.

*Overall, the music sounds good, but the melody and vocal performance take away from the appeal of the track.

*Nice energy and musical production Nick.
*We like the fact that your track has an instant sound attached to it by way of the deep reverb!
*We think overall that the music track is edgy and different and on point, but we think that the writing on the track did not work effortlessly with the track.
*Some of the lyrics seemed forced, for instance “got his attention undivided” And “this happens every time I lash out”
*Every line should be as important as the other.
*We also though that the chorus melody sounded a little bland after the introduction. It didn’t hold up by the time we got to the chorus after the verse.
*The main reason we think this is the case is because the verse and the chorus vocal sound so much alike in terms of the octave and style it is sung in. As a result, by the time you get to the chorus for the same time, you don’t feel like the chorus punches out anymore. It nay have been stronger to have the verse sung in a different octave or even rapped instead of sung. We think this would have helped a great deal.
*Nice job. You kept it feminine and energetic. Let’s see what the clients say.

The seminar really opened up my mind about composition for commercials

• Your groove and track alone sound good. Nice rhythm. We like the use og synth guitar and pads on the verses.
• However, the music married to the lyrics is problematic because of the key you chose to put the track in. The vocals are in a different key.
• If you recorded on midi, this can be easily solved.
• From a mix perspective, I think the smooth pads that are in your track should have more movement to them, because they feel more suspenseful than exciting. Maybe try pulsing the chords instead of sustaining them for four beats. This way your track keeps the bounce.
• The major problem witth the track is that it is in the wrong key. We like your instrumentation and mood.
• It would have bben nice to hear you add some bass in your track as well at key moments other than in the pre-hook section.
• Overall, nice job.

• I really like the rhythm and texture on this track. It sounds like you took more risks on this version and it shows!
• Nice choice of instrumentation for the bass!
• This track is in the right key and it really helps the mood of your track. Our favorite parts are the verses when you strip down to the bass and drums.
• During the pre-chorus, we would have liked to hear maybe something arppeggiating through the smooth pads just to keep the movement and progression of the track.
• The bass change up later in the track took us by surprise, but it worked.

• Your drum beat is hot!!! I like the muscle in your track. Very aggressive and confident.
• The sounds and ideas in your track are great, however the fact that the music and the lyrics do not stay in sync throughout throws us off. If you have Pro Tools, it is pretty easy to take time out to shift them.
• Nice energy overall. It’s a shame the vocals did not lock for you because it takes away from what is a cool track.
• Nice use of the synthesizer and the mention of th original melody in the track.
• I like the fact that your track puts the song in a new space and adds a tougher edge to the girls.
• I like the arpeggiated synth that comes in during your track but it seems to get off beat with your drums at times. Make sure your instrumentation is locked up at all times.

*We love the approach you took using the mellow acoustic guitar with the finger snaps. Very nice! Very risky and original. Nice job not being afraid to do what you feel.
*I think your track could have benefited from some drops in your track. Very simple drops like taking out the guitar for a half a measure and then bringing it back in to give us a break. I know you did it just before the bridge but even before that.
*Your rap is hot!!!!!!!!!!Your whole groove is hot, and that’s why I think that if you did more drops in it, and switched up the arrangement in places, it would be that much better!
*The bridge section is out of key with the vocals. I thought you could have come up with a different bridge direction. The fact that It is out of key takes away from the track. It would have been nice if you took the energy up a notch in the bridge so that when you got back to the chorus we fell back into your smooth guitar groove. Just something to consider.
*Your track surprised us the mostin terms of its original approach. Tight Job Brian!

*We think your track could use a few more melodic ideas in it in order to make a distinction between the verse and the chorus.

Thanks again to 30 30 for the opportunity to work on a fun, challenging, and fantastic project. One that would look great for a Demo real ( hint hint ) I ran into a similar problem that I'm sure we all did, and that was lining up the vocals. It can be frustrating although through years of personal projects i found that it can be as simple as adjusting your tempo by points of a Beat per minute. All programs map slightly differently and can account for that 10th or 20th of a BPM. Some programs will allow you to insert a tempo change marker that i find helps a million with this situation. Its like touching the side of a turntable to keep a mix on point... its gotta be done. My biggest challenge with this remix was the A&R work i put in. Being that I Live in New Hampshire, it was tough:

Getting him to commit was easy... He's FANTASTIC to work with. Huge KUDOS to Larce for a job well done. Professional, and dedicated.

Setting up the studio time, ( Legends Studio - Time Square ) with Nick Price - to work around previously scheduled sessions. Huge thanks to Nick for taking the time work with us on this project and in such short notice... He made it happen. Countelss emails and 50+ phone calls later, we have a great prouduct. All this and more while producing a Hit Instrumental!
I LOVE THIS #ISH ! This is what its all about. Making it happen. Good luck to all the producers and composers out there who made it happen!

I had to make some adjustments to match the vocal. I paced the vocal track at 125.552 BPM rather than 126. Also, after the break (where the original rap was) I had to add about 50ms of silence to keep the vocal in perfect time with the track I made.

Anyone else having trouble getting the lyrics on beat? Maybe its just me lol but i've been trying for 2 1/2 hours. It starts out on beat and gets off beat after the first chorus..I've even been staring at the transients and trying to line those up..please help!! lol
